We know that proper nutrition consists of eating foods that provide nutrients you need to support good health and wellness. Over time, poor nutrition weakens your body, making it difficult to fight infection and leading to other health problems.

You may know that a balanced diet is essential for oral health, but you may not understand the connection. The fact is that if you are not getting enough of certain nutrients, it is harder for tissue in your mouth to resist periodontal infection. Because of low resistance, gum disease can also progress more rapidly than if you were following a healthy diet.

Eating Tips for A Healthier Smile

Most of us know that we need to follow proper nutrition, but sometimes our eating habits get a little haphazard. Maintaining a balanced diet means eating a variety of foods from each of the five major food groups and, of course, limiting the snacks you eat. Here are a few tips to help you make healthier food choices:

  • If you like to snack, plan accordingly. Instead of a chocolate bar, keep plenty of healthy alternatives like raw vegetables, cheese, or fruit on hand.
  • Plan a lot of your nutrition around a meal because saliva that’s released helps to wash away food from your mouth, minimizing the effect of acid on your teeth.
  • Some studies also show a connection between gum disease and a low intake of vitamin C. Choosing fruits and vegetables high in vitamin C, like fresh fruit, tomatoes, and broccoli contributes to a healthier diet and healthier gums.
