Familiarizing your child with the dental office from an early age may play an important role in their long-term oral health. For example, a child who feels comfortable and safe at the dentist may carry these feelings into adulthood.
At Dr. Fairfax & Associates, your Fairfax, VA dentist also understands that dental anxiety in adults often stems from bad or scary experiences in childhood—an abrupt dentist, perhaps.
In our dental office, we cater to children and work hard to make them feel at home, engaged, and welcome when under our care.
Early dental appointments are designed to acclimate your child with the dentist, the dental team, and the various dental instruments we use every day. We start by counting teeth and making dentistry fun with interactive games.
We have found that early dental appointments, shortly after the first tooth eruption, is the best time to start working with your child and stopping anxiety before it starts.
As your child grows and becomes accustomed to our dental office, we add age-appropriate services as needed. Tooth counting gives way to periodic x-rays and teeth cleanings. Cavity-prone children become candidates for fissure sealants and fluoride treatments to lower decay risks and strengthen teeth.
We also provide tips to help you brush your child’s teeth at home, and we work with your older child as he or she transitions to independent brushing and flossing. In some cases, we may also provide nutritional counseling to help you choose snacks and meals that complement excellent oral health.
At Dr. Fairfax & Associates, we are currently accepting new patients, and we would love the opportunity to welcome your child or your family into our dental practice.
