At Dr. Fairfax & Associates Family Dentistry, we understand that kids are prone to cavities. Many children enjoy sweets and sugary beverages and are not always the most thorough brushers and flossers. Our top Fairfax, VA dentist and hygienist have put together a few tips to help you give your child a good head start for their oral health.

Decrease Your Child’s Sweet Snacking

While you don’t want to eliminate childhood goodies altogether, you do want to decrease your child’s risk for cavities. Daily snacks that contain sugar and sweet and acidic juices should be limited to a few times per month.

Supervise Brushing and Flossing

Most children require assistance when brushing, at least until the third or fourth grade. However, peeking in the bathroom to observe brushing habits might be a good idea. Without supervision, your child may brush too hard, which erodes enamel. This can lead to cavities and tooth sensitivity. Additionally, an unsupervised child may skimp on brushing—hitting only a few teeth—in order to return to an activity.

Bring Your Child to the Dentist Regularly

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends twice-yearly dental visits for children. This helps our Fairfax, VA dentist spot potential issues, including teeth that are vulnerable to cavities.

At Dr. Fairfax & Associates Family Dentistry, we also offer fluoride treatments and dental sealants to help your child maintain stronger teeth and develop fewer cavities.

As your child gets older, we begin dental cleanings, which also clears away the bacteria that his or her toothbrush has left behind.
