If you have tooth sensitivity, you don’t need to be told that it's a painful condition. There are numerous reasons why you might have sensitive teeth, but gum recession is often a culprit.

When gum tissue recedes as part of untreated gum disease, it exposes the tooth’s roots. Your tooth roots contain tubules (tiny tubes) that connect directly to the tooth's nerve center. When hot, cold, or sweet foods touch the exposed root, the sensation reaches the nerve and causes sharp, shooting pain.

How to Reduce Tooth Sensitivity

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush to reduce irritation and sensitivity. Be careful when brushing around your gumline, so you don’t remove any more gum tissue. Floss once a day or as directed by your dental hygienist. Use a fluoridated mouth rinse daily.
  • Desensitizing toothpaste is a very effective way to decrease tooth sensitivity. There are many different brands available to choose from, so try several to find one that is most effective for you.
  • If you grind or clench your teeth, ask your dentist about customizing a nightguard to minimize wear and tear on your teeth and sensitive roots.
  • Avoid highly acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices, soft drinks, and tomatoes that aggravate tooth sensitivity.
  • See your dentist every six months for routine teeth cleanings and fluoride treatments.

If you have taken all these steps and still experience tooth sensitivity, your Fairfax dentist offers treatment to minimize your pain. Dental bonding with a composite resin to cover exposed roots is very helpful, as are dentin sealers and fluoride varnishes applied to root surfaces.
