Porcelain veneers are a great option for anyone with dental imperfections to achieve a more beautiful smile. Yet, those who are considering veneers may not know what to expect during their procedure. Dr. Fairfax & Associates strive to make their patients feel more comfortable and relaxed during their treatments by going over the entire process with them and answering all of their questions before they sit in the exam chair.
The Process for Applying Veneers
- Taking impressions – Each veneer is customized for each patient in order to achieve the most natural and cohesive look possible. They do this by taking an impression and photos of your teeth so they can have a better idea of what shape, size, and color the veneer needs to be. The impression is then sent to a dental laboratory where they will create the veneer.
- Preparing the tooth – Before the veneer can be attached, the surface of the tooth must be prepped. Your dentist will remove about half a millimeter of your enamel, which is about the same thickness of the veneer, so it looks more natural and doesn’t add unnecessary bulk to your tooth. It will also be cleaned and etched to provide a stronger bonding surface.
- Attaching the veneer – Your dentist will start by placing the veneer over your tooth without a bonding agent to make sure it is the right shape, size, and color. They can make any minor adjustments in-office if necessary. Once it is perfect, a special cement will be applied to the veneer and then the veneer will be carefully positioned over the tooth. A special light is used to activate the cement so it adheres the veneer to the tooth, and any remaining cement will be removed.
- Follow up visits – A few days after your appointment, your dentist may ask you to come in for a check-up to see how your gums are reacting to the veneers and make sure everything looks like it has adhered correctly.
